How India Is Gradually Becoming SELF RELIANT(and self-confident)?
Recently while addressing the nation, the honorable Prime Minister Narendra Modi, stressed the fact that our country should become SELF RELIANT. It should not be dependent on any outside source for any commodity or take any other help, whatsoever. This is quite an interesting thing which the PM mentioned in the midst of COVID 19 when people were expecting him to inform about the future course of action to combat the virus and also provide some solutions so that our economy can get back on track. But if we try to understand it in greater depth, it is a very meaningful message which he gave.
The heart of a country is its economy and its prosperity. If a country has got all the resources required for a smooth and comfortable living for all its citizens, then the country can be called a developed country. But if a country has to regularly seek help from other countries for different things, then it cannot be considered a developed country. It then becomes a developing country and a dependent country,
If you want a thing done well, do it yourself- Napoleon Bonaparte
Right now India is not a developed country by any stretch of the imagination but it has got the potential, for sure. Right now we expect goods from one country because it provides them at a cheaper rate, we seek help for arms and ammunition from other country and we also require help for different sectors from different countries. The word “EXPECT” is a very dangerous word that is totally against the concept of SELF RELIANCE. When we begin to EXPECT things, we become lazy, we lose our originality and we become dependent.
We get resigned to our fate when we believe that we are not powerful enough to complete our work by ourselves and require outside help. With such negative thinking, we become RELIANT on outside resources. But it only requires a change in mindset, a change in the pattern of our thinking, that we are powerful enough to do things by ourselves and we do not need any outside help.
The great sage and scholar Swami Vivekananda has said, “All power is within you; you can do anything and everything. Believe in that, do not believe that you are weak; do not believe that you are half-crazy lunatics, as most of us do nowadays. You can do anything and everything, without even the guidance of anyone.”
This behavior can be easily seen in small kids. When the kids who have just learned to walk fall down after taking a few steps, their parents offer them help to get up. But they tell them, “Don’t hold my hand. I will stand MYSELF!”
While analyzing the concept of “SELF RELIANCE”, I came across a very inspirational essay on SELF RELIANCE by Ralph Waldo Emerson which he wrote in 1841 and it is so relevant even today.
SUMMARY OF EMERSON’s ESSAY
1. Great Insight
We should respect our insight. We give more importance to other writers and famous people, so we have lost our originality. Instead of living life according to other person’s thoughts, we need to follow our instincts and be original. This is clearly obvious in children as well as teenagers. They are independent and expect no help from outside.
2. Non Conformist / Society & Person relationship.
When a person is alone, he is independent and original. But when he goes in the society, he loses his originality and succumbs to the pressure of the laws and procedures of the society. No matter how much pressure society puts on you, you need to stay original and should not submit to the laws and procedures of the society. People may call you mad or insane but you need to be mentally prepared for that.
A person who is SELF RELIANT and has the courage to overcome the pressures of society has to be ready to follow two kinds of pressure. The first pressure will be from cultured and educated people, which will be easier to handle. But the pressure from common or uneducated people will be very loud and irrational.
People love consistency. Society has created rules so that we live our present life which should be consistent with our past life. But no great person in the world has allowed the present to be ruled by the past. Always make sure that you live in the present and always stay original based on the insights you discover within you.
If we want that we make SELF RELIANCE as our goal and resolution, we should quit praying for something outside of ourselves to save us and instead begin to act. We should not guide our thoughts based on religions or religious leaders but we need to direct them according to our own beliefs and become creative and original.
4. Most Important message of Emerson to Americans
Americans should stop going abroad to get culture and become educated. Instead of going abroad and look for outside help, they should rather stay in the country and work with whatever resources are available to them and make the country prosperous and developed.
This essay clearly resonates with the idea of SELF-RELIANT which the Prime Minister of India mentioned in his speech. No country which always seeks help from other countries will ever make any progress in life. It will always be defensive and will be put under pressure from countries that are offering her help. There are four main sectors of any economy.
Sector 1. Primary (raw materials) – Extraction of raw materials. Farming and Fishing.
Sector 2. Secondary(finished goods) – Manufacturing, Utility – electricity, gas, construction.
Sector 3. Tertiary(service sector) – Retail, Financial Service, Communication, Hospitality and leisure, Real Estate, IT
Sector 4. Quaternary – Education, Public Sector, R&D
A country that is SELF RELIANT in the very true sense of the word will need to take care of all these sectors. Our country is slowly but surely making good progress and we can see positive indications that all these sectors which are the pillars of the economy become strong and powerful.
Trust your instincts, and make judgments on what your heart tells you. The heart will not betray you. – David Gemmell, Fall of Kings
The citizens of the country will also need to understand the importance of SELF RELIANCE and what efforts they need to take on their part to help the country achieve its mission. There are two important factors that our countrymen need to take care of and which will prove to be very critical in achieving our mission of SELF RELIANCE.
1. We need to boycott the use of goods and services from foreign countries even if we face little financial loss in the beginning.
2. Our countrymen should not leave the country and go to other countries to make money or live a luxurious life.
So the question, which may be asked is why would people not buy imported goods if they are cheaper? And why should they not go abroad if they get more money? The reason is that it will require a little bit of sacrifice in the beginning but as our country gradually becomes SELF RELIANT and does not need any outside help, all our core sectors will become strong, prices will automatically come down and the quality of life will only get better as time goes on.
