Revealed! The role of diet in deciding upon our mindset.
It is never easy to make progress in spiritual life. However many people are making sincere efforts to do so, right?
There are many methods in which a normal person can make spiritual progress. Taking the advice of holy sages, offering prayers to God, doing meditation; these are well-known methods we generally adopt. However, we often neglect the importance of a good diet which is equally important in our spiritual quest.
In the Hindu religion and as explained in the Ayurveda, the food can be divided into 3 types.
The Satvik diet consists of light, soothing, easily digested food. Satvik signifies etheric qualities and includes foods such as fruits and vegetables, especially sun foods and ground foods. Satvik food is freshly cooked and very simple. Milk, butter, ghee (clarified butter), fresh ripe fruits, almonds, dates, moong (green gram) sprouts, barley, wheat, cereals, tomatoes, plantains are some of the examples of Satvik food.
Satvic means pure essence. This is the purest diet for consciously spiritual and healthy life. It nourishes the body and maintains it in a peaceful state. It provides the body with vital nutrients. A peaceful mind can develop higher powers of meditation. However, it takes a lot of patience and discipline to eat only Satvik food. So the great masters have explained that we should take a combination of Satvic and Rajasik food. What is Rajasik food?
Foods that are very hot, bitter, sour, dry, or salty can be considered as Rajsik food. It includes hot substances, such as sharp spices or strong herbs, stimulants like coffee and tea. Rajsik food brings energy to the body, they excite our body and nervous system. Rajsik food is good for householders because they have to do work, they need activity and energy. However, too much Rajsik food is not very good for our health and can be harmful over a long period of time. Our food should be a combination of Rajsik and Satvik food.
Tamsik food is dark. It is very dull. It is very harmful to the body and mind. Tamasic foods include meat, poultry, fish, eggs, alcohol, and other intoxicants including drugs. Onions, vinegar, alcohol, stale food are all tamsik food and should be avoided by everybody. It is the most damaging food for our bodies as well as our mind.
Most of the foods these days use chemicals and are overly refined. They are not prepared at the correct time of the year. Although they look very fresh and healthy they are not. They do not provide any healthy nutrients to the body.
